HSBC is taking measures to reduce its operational exposure to Russia and Belarus

HSBC, like many global financial institutions and other businesses, faces an increasingly complex regulatory landscape. The associated operational challenges in managing compliance across the jurisdictions in which we operate, and through which payments are processed, are consistently under review.

In this context, we have decided to take measures to minimise operational exposure to Russia and Belarus, even where such activity is permitted under applicable laws and regulations.

As part of our decision, with effect from 15th September 2023, HSBC has made the decision to no longer process commercial payments by our customers to or from Russia or Belarus, unless we have specifically agreed in advance to process such payments in writing. This includes payments made through accounts that you hold with us, as well as any of your subsidiaries and affiliates who bank with HSBC globally.

Change to account services

Starting from the 1st of October 2023 (the “Effective Date”) HSBC Czech Republic cease to offer collection of Cheques..

Alternative solutions

Over the past years of banking services digitization Cheques have become very rarely used while they pose high financial crime and fraud risk. We strongly recommend customers no longer accept Cheques as a form of payment for your goods and services. The counterparts paying or intending to pay by Cheque should be advised that an electronic payment to a bank account will only be accepted instead.

HMRC Cheques

Until recently the British HM Revenue & Customs offered UK VAT returns only via Cheques. HMRC is now moving away from Cheques and strongly promotes returns via electronic transfers to accounts through its Gform initiative. The following is an HMRC guidance on this transition for its counterparts:

HMRC is making it easier for you, as an overseas customer, to receive repayments directly into your bank account, which is quicker, easier and more secure than receiving a cheque in the post.

Complete our Gform, which can be found on GOV.UK by searching 'VAT repayments', providing the overseas bank account information that you would like HMRC to issue all your future VAT repayments to. There’s also the facility to provide us with the information required to cancel any payable orders you may have received that you are unable to cash. We will replace those payable order repayments with a payment direct to your bank account. To be able to use this form you will need your Government Gateway user ID and password. Your principal place of business address needs to be outside of the UK. Your company name must match the name on your bank account.

You can find further guidance and a link to the Gform here:
